"A New Edition, with the names and portraits of the several writers."

Elegantly bound in a fine full leather period-style binding. The boards are handsomely paneled with precise gilt ruling and feature a central decorative diamond motif. The spine is richly decorated, featuring raised bands, intricate gold tooling within the compartments, and two contrasting red morocco labels lettered in gilt. The publication year (1817) is stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine. New endpapers.

Very Good overall. The bespoke leather binding is in excellent, near-fine condition, remaining tight, secure, and visually striking on the shelf. Internally, the volume contains all three engraved portraits (Hamilton, Jay, and Madison). As is highly typical for American imprints of this specific era, the text block exhibits moderate to heavy foxing and age-browning throughout. Original end papers with previous owner inscriptions.

A highly desirable 1817 edition of The Federalist Papers, arguably the most important American contribution to political philosophy and the definitive commentary on the United States Constitution.

This specific printing by Benjamin Warner holds a notable place in the publishing history of the work, as it explicitly credits Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay on the title page. Furthermore, it boasts the inclusion of the engraved portraits of the three authors. Housed in a stunning, high-quality custom leather binding with exceptional gilt work, this volume serves as both an important historical text and a beautiful display piece. A cornerstone acquisition for any serious collector of early Americana, constitutional history, or fine bindings.

Housed in custom slipcase.
