The Works of Mr. Alexander Pope

Printed by W. Bowyer for Bernard Lintot, between the Temple-Gates, London, 1717

Folio (approx. 12 inches / 30 cm tall)

An early and significant edition of The Works of Mr. Alexander Pope, issued in 1717 by the renowned London publisher Bernard Lintot and printed by William Bowyer. This handsome folio volume gathers many of Pope’s celebrated poems, including An Essay on Criticism, The Rape of the Lock, Eloisa to Abelard, The Temple of Fame, and translations from Statius’ Thebaid. The 1717 edition was among the first comprehensive collections of Pope’s poetry produced during his lifetime and helped to solidify his status as England’s leading poet of the Augustan age.

The volume remains in very good condition for its age. The binding is sound and richly decorated, with some light rubbing and wear at joints. Front cover hinge discreetly reinforced. The text is clean overall, with the usual age toning and scattered foxing. The marbled endpapers are vivid and well preserved.

This 1717 folio is one of the earliest collected editions of Pope’s works, predating the more standardized editions of the 1730s. Published when Pope was at the height of his literary fame, it represents the culmination of his early poetic career. Copies from this edition are prized by collectors of Augustan literature, early English poetry, and fine bindings from the London trade of Bernard Lintot and William Bowyer.
