1781 Revolutionary War-Era Virginia Treasury Note Printed by John Dunlap Rare
Virginia: 1781. The note shows expected signs of age, including toning, folds, and light wear at the edges. However, the printed text is strong, the mottoes remain visible, and all three original signatures are present and bold. Overall, a well-preserved example of a scarce and highly desirable Virginia issue.
Printed by John Dunlap, Printer of the Declaration of Independence
Offered here is a remarkable relic of America’s Revolutionary War era: a $1,200 Virginia Treasury Note, authorized by an Act of the Virginia Assembly on May 7, 1781, and hand-signed by three treasury officials – James Stark, John Lyne, and John Hopkins.
This bill, denominated at Twelve Hundred Dollars (equal to £360 in Virginia currency), was part of the last great wartime issues of Virginia, struck during the final years of the Revolution when paper money was heavily depreciated. The note promised redemption at the Treasury of Virginia in gold or silver, at the extraordinary rate of forty to one, reflecting the financial strain of the conflict.
