A monumental two-volume complete set of the definitive 19th-century biographical and historical study on the Apostle Paul. Authored by William John Conybeare (Late Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge) and John Saul Howson (Dean of Chester), this seminal work seamlessly integrates the historical narrative of Acts, the geography of the ancient Mediterranean world, and fresh translations of Paul's epistles.
This specific printing is the scarce and coveted Quarto edition, standing impressively at 11.5" x 9" with wide margins, rich marbled endpapers, and lavish historical illustrations, steel-engraved plates, and large folding maps.
Bound in handsome dark blue leather with ornate gilt stamping and paneling to the spines and board borders. Exhibits minor scuffing and rubbing to the leather surfaces and gilt spine accents, entirely consistent with age and handling. Solid, heavy bindings with bright text blocks, AEG, pages are remarkably bright and clean, without marks and little to no foxing. Profusely illustrated with numerous full page engravings on steel and wood, some folding.
Widely praised by Victorian theologians as an unmatched masterpiece of historical context, The Life and Epistles of St. Paul was held in high esteem by the legendary "Prince of Preachers," Charles Haddon Spurgeon.
In his authoritative guide on ministerial literature, Commenting and Commentaries, Spurgeon famously recommended the work to preachers and biblical scholars, highlighting its profound utility:
"In the former [Conybeare] the historical connections of the Acts are chiefly stated, and in the latter [Howson] its geographical relations."

"FAR SUPERIOR TO ANY OTHER WORK ON THE SUBJECT. IT STANDS AS SOME O'ERTOPPING ALP, A MARVEL AMONG SCRIPTURAL BIOGRAPHIES."

Spurgeon and his contemporaries regarded Conybeare and Howson's scholarship as an indispensable standard for bringing the world of the early church to vivid, breathing life. A centerpiece for any theological library or antiquarian collection.
