Paolo Rivera (Signed) – Original Oil Painting Cover Art for Marvel's Books of Doom #3 (2005)
An extraordinary, museum-quality original oil painting by Eisner Award-winning artist Paolo Rivera, created as the published cover artwork for Marvel Comics' acclaimed miniseries Books of Doom #3 (cover-dated April 2006, painted in 2005).
Commanding, atmospheric, and steeped in classical fine-art tradition, this original oil painting captures Marvel’s greatest monarch and arch-villain, Victor Von Doom, at a pivotal moment in his definitive origin story. Written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Pablo Raimondi, the six-issue Books of Doom miniseries retold the tragic and ruthless rise of Doctor Doom from his childhood in Latveria to his ascension to the throne.
For the cover of Issue #3—which chronicles Doom's fateful journey to a hidden Tibetan monastery and the forging of his iconic armor—Paolo Rivera delivers a masterclass in chiaroscuro and dramatic scale. Viewed from a low, imposing angle atop dark stone battlements, Doctor Doom braces himself against the parapet, gazing down with quiet, menacing authority. The composition brilliantly contrasts the heavy, brooding shadow of the foreground stone wall with the warm, fiery luminescence reflecting off his newly forged iron mask and articulated gauntlets. Draped in his signature olive-green hooded cloak with distant castle towers rising against a muted, overcast sky, Doom is presented not merely as a comic book antagonist, but as a mythic, Shakespearean figure of power and tragedy.

A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Paolo Rivera broke into the comics industry with painted work for Marvel, quickly earning comparisons to golden-age illustrators and classical painters for his mastery of anatomy, light, and surface texture. Painted works of this caliber from the mid-2000s represent a rare era before digital coloring and illustration became the industry norm for cover production.
