Offered here is Brendan McCarthy's surrealist 2010 Marvel Knights miniseries, Spider-Man: Fever. Following a psychedelic, extra-dimensional journey through the astral plane to rescue Spider-Man's soul from the arachnid demon Bungurk, this page captures the grounded, humorous aftermath as Peter Parker finally regains consciousness in the physical world.
Waking up covered in webbing inside a bathtub at the Sanctum Sanctorum, a disoriented Spider-Man clutches his aching head as Doctor Strange looks on. The dialogue—preserved on the accompanying lettering overlay—captures their classic dynamic: Spider-Man groans that he feels like he has been "sand-bagged by the Hulk" after being sprayed with something nasty by the Vulture, while a deadpan Strange informs him he is coming out of toxic shock and quips, "That's a spider for you" when Peter realizes he instinctively crawled into the tub.
Included Production Elements
Original Penciled and Inked Art Board: Hand-drawn and inked by Brendan McCarthy on standard Marvel Comics art board. The top margin features handwritten production notes identifying the book ("Spiderman: Fever"), Issue ("3"), and Story Page ("22"). The ink work showcases McCarthy’s kinetic, offbeat line weight, heavy blacks on Spider-Man’s costume, expressive Ditko-homage eye shapes, and a hand-drawn "ZIIP!" sound effect.
Original Lettering Acetate Overlay: A clear plastic overlay attached to the board containing the pasted-up dialogue balloons for the entire page.
Hand-Painted Color Guide: Included alongside the black-and-white board is the full-color guide sheet marked "21" in the upper left corner. Rendered in vibrant watercolor and ink wash over a print of the line art, it highlights the rich, classic primary palette of Spider-Man’s red-and-blue suit and Doctor Strange’s Cloak of Levitation against the muted, clinical tones of the bathroom.
100% Character Presence: Both Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are featured prominently across the page layout, culminating in a classic waist-up two-shot in the bottom panel.
Classic Steve Ditko Homage: Spider-Man: Fever was explicitly conceived by McCarthy as a tribute to co-creator Steve Ditko's iconic 1960s runs on both The Amazing Spider-Man and Strange Tales. The angular posture of Spider-Man, the mystical "Kirby/Ditko krackle" bubbles floating around Peter's head, and Strange's high-collared regal bearing pay direct tribute to Marvel's Silver Age roots.
