​Handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter navy morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, some sunning to spines, matching marbled endpapers, untrimmed fore- and bottom edges. Spines feature raised bands accented with gilt rules, lettered in gilt in two compartments, and decorated across the remaining four compartments with central gilt-tooled three-masted tall ships. Light rubbing to spine ends, joints, and board extremities; interior clean and crisp with tight hinges; folding maps intact and neatly folded. Map with some separation at folds. A near fine, elegantly bound set.

First published in 1703, Lahontan’s account remains one of the foundational primary sources on New France, the Great Lakes region, and Native American life in late 17th-century North America. Having arrived in Canada in 1683 as a young French officer, Lahontan traveled extensively through the St. Lawrence basin, Lake Huron, Wisconsin, and the upper Mississippi Valley. His narrative combines keen geographical reconnaissance and descriptions of frontier warfare with vivid, unsparing observations of Algonquin and Huron cultures, fur trade mechanics, and natural history.

​This 1905 McClurg issue edited by eminent American frontier historian Reuben Gold Thwaites (renowned editor of The Jesuit Relations) is widely regarded as the definitive scholarly edition.
