Folio (12.5" x 10"). 383 pp. Richly illustrated throughout with high-quality full-page color plates, photographic reproductions, and architectural views detailing the Byzantine and post-Byzantine treasures, frescoes, icons, sacred metalwork, and illuminated manuscripts of the historic Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the island of Patmos.
Binding & Presentation
Bound in a striking, Byzantine-inspired full tan morocco/calf exhibition binding executed by an Athenian bindery (stamped on the front lower turn-in in Greek capitals: ΑΦΟΙ [...] – ΑΘΗΝΑ).
The spine features two raised bands with blind-tooled borders and title lettering tooled vertically in a stylized Greek uncial-inspired script (PATMOS). The front board features a multi-tiered inset panel construction: an outer border of hand-tooled mosaic gold-leaf tesserae framing a central raised panel of grained wood veneer, titled PATMOS in calligraphic blind tooling with Byzantine scroll terminals. Matching leather turn-ins frame heavily mottled parchment-style handmade endpapers.
Housed in a custom open-ended slipcase covered in matching parchment-veined paper over stiff boards.
Condition
Fine. The leather is supple, clean, and entirely free of wear or rubbing. The interior is crisp, bright, and unmarked. A monumental monograph presented in an architectural, masterwork binding honoring the Byzantine heritage of the Patmos monastery.
