Binding: Handsome contemporary three-quarter dark navy/black crushed morocco over coral and cream marbled paper-covered boards. Spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt, lettered directly in gilt in second compartment on a contrasting red morocco label ("NEW YORK AND ITS ENVIRONS"), and lettered in gilt in fourth compartment ("EXTRA ILLUSTRATED"); date "1891" stamped in gilt at foot.
Title Page: Specially printed or calligraphed title page dated New York, 1897, stating: "A Collection of cuttings, views, engravings and other interesting data relating to Old New York. Extra Illustrated with Two Hundred Illustrations."
Interior: Leaves individually window-mounted, inlaid, or tipped-in to heavy archival ledger stock.

A wide double-page panorama: New York. Taken from Governors Island showing harbor fortifications, cannons, and historic tall-masted shipping.
A large multi-panel folding plate of the famous side-wheel steamboat: Jarrett and Palmer's Great Steamer "Plymouth Rock".

Early exterior photographic halftone plate of Grand Central Station (East 42nd Street) with horse-drawn trolleys, overhead cables, and the original Second Empire mansard roofs.

Condition
Binding: Near Fine. Tight, sound joints and hinges; leather supple with minimal rubbing to extremities; gilt bright and crisp.
Interior: Very Good to Near Fine. Text and plates generally clean, showing only light, occasional age-toning and faint scattered foxing typical of inlaid 19th-century paper stocks. Double-page folding plates remain well-attached with crisp folds.
A prime example of late Victorian Grangerism (extra-illustration) devoted to New York local history. Rather than expanding a single published monograph, the compiler constructed a standalone bespoke chronicle of the metropolis on uniform oversized sheets, pairing historical retrospectives with then-contemporary Gilded Age views.
