The Works of Joseph Conrad: The Sun-Dial Edition (20 Volumes)

Author: Joseph Conrad

Publisher: Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company

Publication Dates: 1920–1925

Edition: Limited "Sun-Dial" Edition. One of 735 sets published.

A highly desirable 20-volume collection of the prestigious Sun-Dial Edition of Joseph Conrad's works. Distinguished by Joseph Conrad’s signature on the limitation page of Volume I (Almayer's Folly), this limited edition is a cornerstone for collectors of early 20th-century literature. The volumes are uniformly bound, featuring richly gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, and "Sun-Dial Edition" stamped at the foot, presenting an elegant and cohesive appearance on the shelf. Some rubbing to leather, a few spine heads chipped, internally bright and clean, without marks and no foxing.

The Sun-Dial Edition was originally issued as a rolling subscription rather than a single release. The first 18 volumes were published between 1920 and 1921, representing Conrad's completed life's work at the time. As new works were finished, Doubleday printed additional uniform volumes for subscribers. Volume 19 (The Rover) was added in 1923, and Volume 20 (Suspense, Conrad's final, unfinished novel) was added posthumously in 1925.

It is incredibly common for these sets to stop at Volume 20, as original subscribers frequently let their standing orders lapse following the author's death. This collection represents that exact 1920–1925 run. Cataloger's Note: This set lacks the final two posthumous literary volumes ("Tales of Hearsay" and "Last Essays") published in 1925 and 1926, as well as the two supplementary biographical volumes ("Life and Letters") published in 1928.
