The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote

London: A. Millar, 1755. Hayman. First Smollett Edition. Publishers Original 4to Calf Bindings.

The first edition of Smollett's translation, and also the first appearance of the stunning, iconic copper engraved plates that captured so well the spirit and characterizations of Cervantes. 4to. 28.5 by 24 cm. [4], xxviii, 403, viii, 466, [1] pp. And 28 copper engraved plates. With armorial bookplate of Thomas Wharton in both volumes. Condition: all joints rubbed, minor splitting or starting both front joints at top and bottom. Minor stains on calf boards, and a few small abrasions, etc. Still, the contemporary calf remains very handsome, and gilt decoration on spine is quintessential of the period. Within, offsetting of the plates, as the norm, and some light scattered foxing. The leaves are mostly clean, and overall, this is a lovely copy.
