London: John Murray, 1855. Fine Leather Bound by James Toovey.
Ticknor, George. History of Spanish Literature [Vol.
I-III]. London: John Murray, 1855.
A history of Spanish literature from the medieval era to the early 19th century, complete in three volumes. "New edition." Bound in contemporary full Spanish-marbled goatskin over boards, for bookseller James Toovey (1814-1893), with his ink stamp on front free endpaper; covers gilt with decorative and fillet rolls; spines with five raised bands, two lettering pieces, and compartments gilt with scrolling cornerpieces around a central lozenge; board edges gilt with double fillet; turn-ins gilt with decorative rolls; Spanish-marbled endpapers; and all edges gilt. 9 x 5.75 inches; 3 volumes. From the collection of Arthur Williams Hall (1873-1952) of Massachusetts, bibliophile and manufacturer of laboratory equipment, with his pencil notes on the front free endpaper of vol. 1; thence by descent through three generations. Bindings with trivial wear; foxing to endpapers and the first few leaves of vol. 3. Fine. Though criticized for its Castilian-centric view of Spanish literature, Ticknor's history is considered a landmark contribution to Hispanism. A very attractive, spectacularly bound copy.
