ADS 3/12-18/1864 Confederate States Form No. 22 M. H. Wright, Commanding Colonel, Atlanta Arsenal approves payment of $30 to Bounty Hunter J. H. Turner for capturing Alfred Rennel, a Confederate deserter tuned Union Spy, who was seen lurking around Atlanta gathering information on strength of the Confederate Army. This information would have been useful for the Union Army in the siege of Atlanta, which included several battles between early May and Sept 2, when Confederates abandoned Atlanta, leaving an unobstructed path for Sherman's March to the Sea.
 

 Alfred Rennel, a Confederate Civil Engineer with Company G., 1st Louisiana Infantry, was detached and reassigned to the Atlanta Arsenal. He deserted the Confederate Army on 2/6/1864 and was caught spying for the Union on 3/18/1864 by J.H. Turner.
 

 Form No. 22 The Confederate States: To J. H. Turner 1864 Mch 12 To arresting and turning over to the commanding officer at Atlanta Arsenal Private Alfred Runnel, Co. "G" 1s Louisiana Regm't, advertised by him as a deserter and for whom the usual reward ($30.00) was offered S30.00
 

 Hd. Qrt's Atlanta Ga. C.F. Arsenal March 12, 1864 App'd Private Alfred Rennel deserted from this place on or about the 6th Feb'y 1864 and was delivered to me by J.H. Turner on the 18th day of March 1864.

 Newspaper Clipping: Deserted About the 8th Instant, Private Alfred Rennel, company G. 1st Louisiana regiment, detailed for duty at this Arsenal by General Johnston. Said Rennel is a deserter from the Federal army - he is about six feet high, dark complexion, dark hair and hazel eyes, and weighs about one hundred and seventy pounds. He is a native of France and is said to be a good machinist. The usual reward will be paid for his apprehension and confinement.
