Ronald Reagan Signs a Copy of One of His More Enduring Quotes, Delivered before the U.N. General Assembly in 1986 Blaming the Nuclear Arms Race on "mistrust" between Nations.

Reagan's quote reads in full: “Nations do not mistrust each other because they are armed; they are armed because they mistrust each other.”

Speaking of U.S.-Soviet relations and his steadfast determination to reduce arms, President Reagan would often say: “We don’t mistrust each other because we’re armed; we’re armed because we mistrust each other.” He believed that if the mistrust was eliminated, then so, too, could the dangerous, destabilizing weapons. Reagan was confident that if he could just get his Soviet counterpart in a room and tell him face-to-face that the United States had no hostile intent, the mistrust would begin to evaporate. Instinctively he knew that could not be accomplished through the traditional diplomacy of a bureaucratic State Department. The summits with General Secretary Gorbachev would eventually lead to significant arms reduction.

A terrific piece, ideal for display!
